TurboScribe — the obvious starting point

TurboScribe's free tier is unusually generous: three files per day, each up to 30 minutes, which is 90 minutes of daily transcription without paying. The trade-off is a low-priority queue, and you do need to register an account. The Unlimited tier at $10/month with monthly billing or $120/year on annual billing removes the daily cap and raises the per-file ceiling to 10 hours. There is no per-file pay-as-you-go option on TurboScribe — earlier reports of a $4.99 per-file structure were actually describing the competitor Videotobe, not TurboScribe.

Sonix — best for serious monthly volume

Sonix was the only one of the four we could pull directly from the official pricing page on 25 September 2026, so these numbers are firm. The pay-as-you-go rate is $10/hour billed per second. The Core annual plan is $275/year (~$22.9/month) for 5 hours per month, Advanced is $550/year (~$45.8/month) for 20 hours per month. Storage scales from 25 GB on Core to 100 GB on Pro. Overage on any plan is the same $10/hour as PAYG. SRT and VTT export are included across all paid tiers.

Sonix is the right pick if you transcribe every day and want predictable per-hour pricing plus a real PAYG option when volume spikes. The catch is that the lowest paid plan is roughly twice TurboScribe's annual entry price for a fraction of the monthly minutes.

HappyScribe — cheapest on paper, messy in practice

HappyScribe's pricing is the hardest to pin down. Capterra lists Lite at €6/month, eesel shows $9/month, itqlick converts an annual plan to about $8.50/month, and Geekflare shows Basic at $10/month. The underlying truth is probably a regional / billing-cycle split, but the practical takeaway is that there is a sub-$10 entry plan, contrary to earlier reports of a pricing gap in that band. Pro sits around $17–24/month for roughly 25 hours of monthly import, and Business around $29–39/month for about 40 hours.

The 10-minute free trial exports with a watermark on the basic plan, so you cannot deliver a clean trial file. If you need a true free, clean output for a one-off job, HappyScribe's trial is not it.

VEED — editor first, converter second

VEED is a video editor that also generates subtitles, not a dedicated transcription service. The free tier lets you try the subtitle converter, but every export is watermarked and capped at 10 minutes per file, with roughly 120 AI credits and 2 GB of storage. Lite on annual billing starts at about $12/month and removes the watermark plus unlocks 1080p. Pro and Studio add more credits, brand kits, and team seats.

The watermark gate is the deciding factor: if you need a clean SRT for a client, you must pay. For a creator who edits the video in VEED anyway and just wants the subtitles alongside, the $12/month annual entry is competitive.

All four cloud tools bill by minutes of audio or by subscription seats. None of them specialize in subtitle repair — shifting timestamps, fixing overlapping cues, merging speakers, or converting between SRT, VTT, ASS, and TTML offline. If that is your day-to-day work, paying $10–25/month to a cloud service to upload, transcribe, and re-download a file you already have on disk is the slow, expensive path.

An offline converter makes sense in four cases:
