What is an ASS file?
ASS (Advanced SubStation Alpha) is the fansub and power-user subtitle format: a plain-text script with [Script Info], [V4+ Styles] and an [Events] section of Dialogue: lines. Each Dialogue carries layered timing (centisecond precision), a style name, margins — and text loaded with override tags for fonts, colors, positioning and karaoke. That richness is exactly why players outside the SubStation family often refuse it.
[Events]
Format: Layer, Start, End, Style, Name, MarginL, MarginR, MarginV, Effect, Text
Dialogue: 0,0:00:01.00,0:00:03.50,Default,,0,0,0,,{\i1}Hello{\i0} from the ASS script.
Dialogue: 0,0:00:03.50,0:00:06.00,Top,,0,0,0,,Second line.\NStyles are dropped.
What survives the conversion — and what doesn't
Timing and text survive; presentation does not. SRT has no styles, colors, positioning or karaoke model, so the [V4+ Styles] section and every {\…} override tag are dropped, forced line breaks (\N) become real newlines, and non-breaking spaces (\h) become normal spaces. The result is the same dialogue, at the same times, in the format every player accepts. Have an older SubStation script? The SSA to SRT converter handles v4.0 files the same way.
Converted, but the subtitles still look broken?
Conversion changes the container — it cannot fix overlapping cues, garbled characters or timing drift that was already in the source.

Will my fonts, colors and positioning survive?
No. SRT cannot represent them. All styling — fonts, colors, screen position, borders, karaoke effects — is stripped, leaving plain text with timing.
What happens to {\…} tags in the text?
They are removed entirely. Tags like {\i1}, {\pos(192,240)} and {\k44} have no SRT equivalent, so clean text is what remains.
Are karaoke timings preserved?
The words are, the syllable timing isn't — {\k} karaoke tags are stripped like any other override. SRT has no karaoke model.
Is it free? Do I need an account?
