What is an SSA file?
SSA (SubStation Alpha) is the 1990s-era ancestor of the ASS format: a plain-text script with [Script Info], a [V4 Styles] section and an [Events] section of Dialogue: lines whose first field is Marked=0. Timing is written to the centisecond (H:MM:SS.cc), and text carries the same {\…} override tags and \N line breaks its successor uses. Old fansub rips, archived releases and legacy tools still ship it.
[Events] Format: Marked, Start, End, Style, Name, MarginL, MarginR, MarginV, Effect, Text Dialogue: Marked=0,0:00:01.00,0:00:03.50,Default,NTP,0000,0000,0000,,Hello from the SSA script. Dialogue: Marked=0,0:00:03.50,0:00:06.00,Default,NTP,0000,0000,0000,,Second line.\NStyles are dropped.
SSA vs ASS vs SRT — what actually changes?
SSA and its successor ASS share the same script structure — the converter reads the Format header, so both dialects work. What changes in the jump to SRT is everything presentational: the styles section, font and color choices, margins and positioning, and every {\…} tag are dropped, because SRT stores plain text and timestamps only. Timing survives intact — just rewritten from centiseconds into SRT's comma-millisecond form.
Converted, but the subtitles still look broken?
Conversion changes the container — it cannot fix overlapping cues, garbled characters or timing drift that was already in the source.

Does this also work on .ass files?
Yes. ASS (v4.0+) uses the same Events/Format structure with a different style version — the converter reads the Format header either way. For ASS-specific quirks, see the ASS to SRT converter.
Why is my SSA text full of Marked=0?
Marked=0 is the SSA v4.0 marker field at the start of each Dialogue line — legacy syntax. The converter skips it and reads Start/End/Style/text per the Format header.
Are the styles really gone?
Yes — SRT has no styling model. Fonts, colors, margins and screen positions are stripped; dialogue text and timing carry over.
Is it free? Do I need an account?
