How to convert WebVTT to SRT

  1. Drop in your .vtt file Or paste the caption text — conversion runs entirely in your browser.
  2. Cue data is remapped Timing lines become comma-millisecond SRT timestamps; the WEBVTT header, NOTE/STYLE/REGION blocks, cue identifiers and positioning settings are removed; cues are renumbered.
  3. Download your .srt Clean numbered cues for any player, editor or platform.

WebVTT vs VTT — same file, different name?

Yes — WebVTT is the format's full name; ".vtt" is just its extension. Files exported by browsers, YouTube, Coursera, Zoom and most HTML5 players start with the WEBVTT magic line and carry dot-millisecond timestamps, optional cue identifiers and positioning settings. Whether you arrived here searching "webvtt to srt" or "vtt to srt", this converter reads the same file — as does the VTT to SRT converter, which shares this engine.

WEBVTT

intro-cue
00:00:01.000 --> 00:00:03.500 position:20% align:start
Hello from your WebVTT file.

00:00:03.500 --> 00:00:06.000
Cue identifiers and settings are stripped.

What changes in the output?

Text and timing carry over untouched. The container changes: SRT wants numbered cues, comma milliseconds (00:00:01,000), no header and no per-cue settings — so identifiers, position:/align: settings, NOTE/STYLE/REGION blocks and voice tags (<v Speaker>) are stripped; simple <i>/<b> emphasis survives because SRT supports it. The full container comparison lives in SRT vs VTT.

Converted, but the subtitles still look broken?

Conversion changes the container — it cannot fix overlapping cues, garbled characters or timing drift that was already in the source.

WebVTT to SRT FAQ

Is WebVTT different from VTT?

No — WebVTT is the format's proper name and .vtt is its file extension. This converter and the VTT to SRT converter run the same engine.

What happens to cue identifiers like "intro-cue"?

They are dropped — SRT numbering replaces them. SRT cues are identified by their sequential number, not a name.

Why do milliseconds use a comma now?

SRT writes 00:00:01,000 with a comma; WebVTT writes 00:00:01.000 with a dot. Players that parse SRT strictly reject the dot form, so timestamps are rewritten.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

Free, and no account — conversion runs entirely in your browser. Your file never leaves your machine.
