What is a VTT file?

VTT (WebVTT — Web Video Text Tracks) is the caption format built for HTML5 video: a WEBVTT header at the top, cues with HH:MM:SS.mmm --> HH:MM:SS.mmm timing lines using a dot before the milliseconds, and optional per-cue settings like positioning and alignment. It is what browsers, YouTube exports and most streaming players use natively.

WEBVTT

00:00:01.000 --> 00:00:03.500 align:start position:10%
Hello from your caption file.

00:00:03.500 --> 00:00:06.000
Two cues, dot milliseconds, optional settings.

VTT vs SRT — what actually changes?

The caption text and the timing values carry over untouched. What changes is the container: SRT wants numbered cues, comma milliseconds (00:00:01,000) and no header or cue settings — so the WEBVTT line, NOTE/STYLE blocks and positioning settings like align:start position:10% are removed, and each cue gets renumbered. Voice tags (<v Name>) and class tags are stripped; simple <i>/<b> emphasis is kept, since SRT supports it. Want the comparison in depth? See SRT vs VTT.

Converted, but the subtitles still look broken?

Conversion changes the container — it cannot fix overlapping cues, garbled characters or timing drift that was already in the source.

VTT to SRT FAQ

Are positioning and styling kept?

No. SRT has no model for screen position, alignment or color, so cue settings and style blocks are stripped. Timing and text carry over intact.

Does this work on YouTube .vtt caption exports?

Yes. YouTube exports are WebVTT with auto-caption quirks (duplicate overlapping cues, inline timestamp tags). The converter strips the tags and duplicate timing artifacts, giving you clean numbered SRT.

Why do the milliseconds use a comma now?

That is the SRT standard: 00:00:01,000 with a comma. VTT writes 00:00:01.000 with a dot — players that read SRT strictly will reject the dot version.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

Free, and no account — conversion runs entirely in your browser. Your file never leaves your machine.
